The Full Story
About
Imagine a young girl peeking hesitantly, almost tentatively around the crimson velvet curtain which separates the real from the surreal. Never before in this space in time, she sees her classmates being led into the school auditorium streaming in like dominos into the hard, solid wood chairs as she backs away, preparing for her solo. She has no idea the movements she will perform. She knows only that once the melody begins, her body will know what to do. She smooths her pink, used recital costume and glances at the record player. It is time. She steps out to the notes of George Gershwin's, An American in Paris, a smile breaking upon her face. She knows it. She is home.
Imagine this same girl, same space, different time. Chatter fills the stage. Her classmates are full of excitement as the curtain opens. The costumes are vibrant, alluring, the backdrop familiar, almost comforting. She is entering from the other side of the stage than before, her black and red costume rocking back and forth in melody with her hoop skirt. Her scepter, made in the shape of a heart comes to rule quickly in her kingdom. The crowd begins to hush. Time begins to slip into another reality and take a breath of its own. She feels the rush of excitement in her cheeks that is all too familiar. It is time. She raises her scepter and enters her own world as she exclaims, "Off with her head."
This same girl is now a year older. Same place, different circumstance. She chews on her pencil thoughtfully as she writes and rewrites similar patterns. Ebbing through her mindfulness, it is as if she knows what word is to belong next. These words and images transcend time and space communicating to her as the correct sequence flow out onto the page. She has been writing before she could genuinely read. This time is different however. She will enter a contest to have her work published. She collects her pages, and directs her attention to the desk at the front of the room. She recognizes and trusts the uncanny and familiar feeling. This too fits.
